Process
- Join the Washington Trails Association, Wallowa Mtns-Hells Canyon Trail Association, Idaho Trails Association, or Montana Wilderness Association! Not required but highly recommended.
- Pick a route, sign up on Ultrasignup, gather all your info, get some paper maps, download your gps/gpx files, pick a day, call the ranger station to check on trail conditions, get your gear together, and GO! Be sure to bring your parking passes or fill out wilderness permits when you arrive.
- Complete the route, don't get injured, have the time of your life, take lots of great pictures, soak up the wilderness, don't die, relish your accomplishment, and make it home safely.
- Do your own research, and if you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact me or the ranger district closest to the route. Rangers are there to help you and enable safe travel in the backcountry. They usually have first-hand experience of the area and can hopefully give information on recent trail conditions, trouble spots, fire closures, etc. Please utilize them!
- Join the Facebook group, follow and tag the Instagram , or even make a YouTube video and tell everyone how it went! Post your best pictures and give us a quick trip report about your adventure. If you don't have social media, you can write a blog post or just email me a report about your trip that I can share online. It doesn't count if it's not on social media (that's a joke).
Rules
- All routes must be completed in a self or unsupported style. This means no one meeting you halfway to give you food/water/etc. The idea is to minimize impact on our wilderness areas. If you pass a kindly hiker that offers you a Clif bar, feel free to accept, as this falls under "Trail Magic" and is beyond the realm of Earthly laws.
- Leave No Trace principles must be observed. Please leave these areas better than you find them. Basically, carry out everything that you brought with you, and pick up and carry out any trash that you are capable of carrying out. Leave it better than you found it.
- Routes can be completed solo or with friends, but please keep group sizes small. Registration is not required for participation, but only those that register will have their time posted and receive any swag. All profits from registration fees are donated to local trail maintenance groups.
- Your submitted time must be from first step to last step on the route, or from car to car/trailhead to trailhead where stated. That includes any and all breaks, including if you decide to stop and camp/sleep. If using Strava, you must find the "Elapsed Time." Moving time is invalid, as Strava subtracts time that you are stopped or moving too slowly. On some of these routes, you may be moving too slowly for Strava/Garmin/etc to calculate your pace.
